Greater Mukono Leaders Hold Joint Council Sitting to Honour the Legacy of Hon. Christopher Godfrey Kiwanuka Musisi-“He respected cultural institutions and promoted decentralization he was clean public service free from corruption-Minister Magyezi
Mukono – A historic Joint Council Sitting bringing together leaders from across Greater Mukono including Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe, and Buvuma districts convened at the CAO's boardroom in Mukono to honour the life and legacy of the late Hon. Christopher Godfrey Kiwanuka Musisi, the former District Chairperson of Mukono.
The Joint Council was chaired by Rt. Hon. Betty Hope Nakasi, Speaker of Mukono District Local Government, and featured moving other speakers from different Districts and tributes from leaders, civil servants, and members of the community who gathered to celebrate Musisi’s selfless leadership and enduring impact on the region.
The motion to appreciate Musisi’s immense contribution was tabled by Hon. Asuman Muhumuza, a District Councilor representing the elderly, who also serves as former District Vice Chairperson.
Buikwe District Speaker, Hon. Waswa George, praised the late Musisi as a devoted advocate for education. He commended Musisi’s commitment to protecting the environment, particularly his campaign for tree planting across the region. “Leaders must emulate him many holds office but do not fulfill their responsibilities,” Waswa noted.
His Worship Erisa Mukasa Nkoyoyo, Mayor of Mukono Municipality, highlighted Musisi’s efforts to encourage citizens to pay local taxes and urged village leaders to lead by example. He particularly remembered Musisi’s campaign to promote poultry farming as a sustainable economic activity and his devotion to ensuring his own children received a good education inspiring many others to do the same.
The Resident District Commissioner of Buikwe District who represented the RDC’s said that the Late Kiwanuka Musis loved his Nation and even President Museveni commended his good works he did as a leader in different capacity.
Milton Kato, former District Personnel Officer during Musisi’s tenure, remembered him as a rare leader who often ran unopposed because of his popularity and integrity. Kato called on today’s politicians to emulate Musisi’s unifying approach, urging leaders to rally behind a single candidate to avoid unnecessary political rivalry. He also advocated for full devolution of powers to local governments a cause Musisi strongly championed.
Dr. Mukulu Fred, the District Production Officer, described Musisi as a patient yet decisive leader who motivated staff through action and personal commitment. “He would convene meetings even on weekends, and once mobilized councilors to contribute Shs. 500,000 and Heads of Departments Shs. 1 million for a noble cause,” Mukulu revealed.
Hon. Stephen Sserubula Kinalwa, MP for Lugazi Municipality, emphasized the need to celebrate great leaders while they are still alive. He credited Musisi for mentoring many political figures and criticized corruption among current leaders, calling for more investment in education instead of enriching a few.
Hon. Betty Bakireke Nambooze, MP for Mukono Municipality, remembered Musisi as a strong ally of journalists who worked closely with the media to ensure transparency. She praised him for transforming Mukono into a model district and urged leaders to honor his memory by fulfilling their duties faithfully.
Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, the current LCV Chairperson of Mukono District and Secretary for Education and Sports, encouraged leaders to reflect Musisi’s values in their actions. “Let us lead with humility, serve with love, and build with a vision for future generations,” he said, calling Musisi’s legacy a blueprint for integrity and service.
The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, who served as the chief mourner, applauded Mukono District for organizing the memorial sitting. “I began my public service career in Mukono as District Planner, and I am proud of the district for producing such an iconic leader,” Magyezi said.
He revealed that Musisi had acquired 51 acres of land for the development of Kyetume Market and was instrumental in supporting staff welfare and education. “He respected cultural institutions and promoted decentralization, associations like the Mukono Journalists Association, and clean public service free from corruption,” the Minister added.
Hon. Magyezi stated that LC1 and Women Council elections will be held alongside the General Elections, and allowances for Councilors will be increased.
The Joint Council Sitting was a powerful reminder of the legacy left behind by Hon. Christopher Godfrey Kiwanuka Musisi. A man of vision, humility, and service, his memory continues to inspire current and future generations to lead with integrity and commitment to the people, so it is remembered that Hon.Kiwanuka Musis Hon. Kiwanuka Musisi, who served with distinction as Former LCV Chairperson, Mukono District (1992–2002),Founding Chairperson, Founder president of Uganda Local Governments’ Association (ULGA),Former Member of the 5th Parliament of Uganda,Former Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Kampala and was buried today at Mawoto in Najja Sub county ,Buikwe District.
