Mukono District Leaders Partner with Teach For Uganda in Joint Monitoring Exercise to Improve Education Standards-Leaders Call for Enhanced Teacher Training, Improved Infrastructure, and Stronger Community Support in Government Primary Schools.

Today, Mukono District Local Government leaders, in partnership with Teach for Uganda, carried out a joint stakeholder monitoring exercise aimed at strengthening engagement among education stakeholders, fostering collaboration, and assessing the impact of ongoing education programs across government primary schools.

The monitoring team visited ten primary schools in the district, including: Bamusuuta C/U P/S, Bugoye C/U P/S, Kalagala P/S, Kiyola C/U P/S, Kyabazaala Public P/S, Kyetume SDA P/S, Nakibanga C/U P/S, St. Andrew Kisoga P/S, and St. Joseph Sozzi P/S.

This initiative builds on the partnership that began in 2023 between Teach for Uganda and Mukono District Local Government, focusing on enhancing foundational literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century skills among underprivileged children in lower primary classes.

The joint engagement included a multi-sectoral team composed of the Acting Assistant Clerk to Council, Mr. Kayoro Pontious, who represented the Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Elizabeth Namanda; the Community Development Office led by Ms. Doreen Najjuma; the District Inspector of Schools, and representatives from Teach for Uganda.

The monitoring exercise highlighted the importance of joint efforts among local government departments, education stakeholders, and civil society partners in improving education outcomes at the grassroots level.

Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of Teach for Uganda, Ms. Charlotte Iraguha, applauded the strong collaboration with Mukono District and shared key insights from the monitoring. She pointed out that, although significant progress has been made, understaffing remains a major challenge in many of the schools visited. She called on government to increase the wage bill, enabling local governments to recruit more teachers and reduce the pupil-teacher ratio.

Ms. Iraguha also emphasized the urgent need for investment in school infrastructure, particularly in expanding classrooms and improving learning environments. She further urged community leaders to support school administrators in engaging parents to contribute scholastic materials and promote school feeding programs, both of which are crucial in ensuring student retention and performance.

On his part, the District Inspector of Schools, Mr. Robert Mawanda, praised Teach for Uganda’s role in strengthening Early Childhood Development (ECD), which he described as the bedrock of a strong education system. He noted that working with organizations like Teach for Uganda offers a strategic pathway to sustainable educational improvement in the district. Mr. Mawanda encouraged the organization to seek more funding to expand support to all teachers, thereby enhancing their impact.

Representing the District Chairperson LC V and Secretary for Education and Sports, Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, the District Vice Chairperson LC V, Hon. Jorem Kabali Kimera—who also serves as Secretary for Finance and Administration and District Councilor for Nagojje Sub-county—commended Teach for Uganda for their tremendous work in supporting the education sector in Mukono District.

Hon. Kabali emphasized that continuous teacher training and increased support for government schools are vital in improving education service delivery. He called upon all education stakeholders, including development partners, to intensify efforts in empowering teachers, as this will lead to better learning outcomes and a brighter future for children in Mukono District.

The joint monitoring exercise reaffirmed the value of partnership, accountability, and shared responsibility in transforming education in Mukono District. With continued collaboration between local government and development partners like Teach for Uganda, and with increased investment in teachers, infrastructure, and community involvement, the district is firmly on the path to achieving inclusive and quality education for all.
