Mukono District is in the Central Region of Uganda, approximately 21–27 kilometres east of Kampala City. The district headquarters are located in Mukono Municipality. Mukono is strategically positioned within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and serves as an important centre for trade, industry, agriculture, settlement and public service delivery.
The District lies approximately at 0°21′N latitude and 32°45′E longitude and shares boundaries with several districts and Lake Victoria.
Mukono District has a rich history rooted in the cultural and administrative heritage of the Buganda Kingdom. Before Uganda attained independence in 1962, the area that constitutes present-day Mukono was part of Kyaggwe County, one of the counties of the Buganda Kingdom.
Following the abolition of the Buganda Kingdom's administrative structures in 1967, the area became part of the newly established East Mengo District. In 1974, East Mengo was renamed Kyaggwe District, and in 1980, it officially became known as Mukono District.
The District has since evolved into one of Uganda's important administrative, commercial and industrial areas, while retaining strong cultural links with Buganda.
The name Mukono is traditionally associated with the Luganda word omukono, meaning "hand." According to local historical accounts, people from Kyaggwe County traditionally presented gifts to the Kabaka of Buganda. As the population increased and gatherings became large, the Kabaka directed that gifts be handed to the County Chief, who would present them to him on behalf of the people.
The County Chief therefore became regarded as the "hand" (omukono) through which the people presented their gifts to the Kabaka. This traditional account is associated with the origin of the name Mukono.

Mukono District Local Government is governed through a decentralized local government system in accordance with Uganda's local government framework.
The District is administratively organized into two counties and Mukono Municipality, together with rural sub-counties, town councils and divisions.
Mukono County comprises six sub-counties, two town councils, Mukono Municipality and two divisions. The administrative areas include: Ntenjeru-Kisoga Town Council, Katosi Town Council, Nakisunga Sub-county, Kyampisi Sub-county, Mpatta Sub-county, Mpunge Sub-county, Koome Sub-county, Nama Sub-county, Goma Division and Central Division.

Nakifuma County comprises five sub-counties and three town councils, including: Kasawo Sub-county, Kasawo Town Council, Ntunda Sub-county, Nagojje Sub-county, Kimenyedde Sub-county, Seeta-Namuganga Sub-county, Nagalama Town Council and Namataba Town Council.
The District is further divided into parishes/wards and village councils to facilitate administration, community mobilization and delivery of government services.
The District Council is the supreme policy-making organ of Mukono District Local Government. It is headed by the LCV Chairperson, with the District Speaker providing leadership to council proceedings. The Council is responsible for debating and approving policies, plans, budgets and development priorities of the District.
The District Executive Committee provides political leadership and handles key policy matters, including making recommendations to the full District Council.

Mukono's location near Kampala and within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area makes it an important destination for investment, industrialization, agriculture, trade, transport and urban development.
The District's connection to Lake Victoria also provides opportunities in fisheries, tourism, water transport and related economic activities. Its rural communities provide a strong base for agriculture and agro-processing, while the growing urban centres offer opportunities for trade, manufacturing and service-sector development.
