Mukono District Local Government has held a community engagement with residents of Bamutakudde LCI in Ddundu Parish, Kyampisi Sub-county, where District Chairperson Hon. Francis Lukooya Mukoome assured residents of government interventions in roads, water, health, youth empowerment and community development.
The engagement, led by the Bamutakudde LCI Chairperson Hon. Solomon Serwanja, brought together the District Chairperson, members of the District Executive Committee and the District Speaker, Hon. Asuman Muwumuza Lubowa.
During the engagement, Hon. Serwanja highlighted several challenges affecting residents, including inadequate access to clean water, insufficient street lighting and the impact of factories on the community.
He appealed to the District Chairperson to intervene and support the community in addressing these challenges.
Hon. Lukooya warned proprietors of factories operating in Mukono District against establishing or expanding industries without adequately involving the communities where they operate. He emphasized that investors must comply with environmental requirements, including undertaking and presenting Environmental Impact Assessments where required, especially where their activities may affect residents.
The District Chairperson thanked the people of Bamutakudde for electing Hon. Solomon Serwanja as their local council chairperson, noting that strong local leadership is important in identifying community challenges and linking residents to government interventions.
Hon. Lukooya said residents of Bamutakudde were fortunate because the road that has been a major challenge to the community is set to receive attention. He revealed that culverts had already arrived and assured residents that the district would work on improving the road.
He further explained that the district was working towards repairing its graders with support from the central government to improve road maintenance across the District.
On the water challenge, the Chairperson said the District was committed to addressing water shortages once the well-drilling machine becomes operational, which would enable the district to undertake water interventions in Bamutakudde and other affected communities.
In the health sector, Hon. Lukooya said government plans would strengthen health service delivery, including deployment of more health workers at Health Centre IIIs. He also promised that Bamutakudde would benefit from improved health infrastructure, including consideration of a mini theatre.
The Chairperson also outlined several initiatives aimed at empowering young people and improving household incomes. He said the district would introduce greenhouse farming and support youth to venture into beekeeping and other income-generating activities.
He urged the Bamutakudde LCI Chairperson to mobilize and register young people in the area so that they can benefit from employment opportunities through the Job Centre programme.
He also encouraged single mothers to register with relevant local structures so that they can be identified and linked to available government programmes and support.
Hon. Lukooya further emphasized the importance of keeping children in school and cautioned against denying learners access to government schools. He called upon parents, local leaders and schools to work together to ensure that children remain in school and benefit from government education programmes.
The District Chairperson assured the youth that the district would support the establishment of an apiary for beekeeping and a greenhouse to provide practical opportunities for skills development, employment and household income generation.
The community engagement provided an opportunity for Bamutakudde residents to present their concerns directly to the District leadership and receive commitments on key development priorities.
The district leadership emphasized that addressing challenges in roads, water, health, education, environmental protection and youth empowerment requires cooperation between local leaders, residents, investors and government. The meeting concluded with a call for residents to actively participate in government programmes and work closely with their local leaders to ensure that the promised interventions translate into tangible improvements in the community.
