MUKONO DISTRICT OFFICIALLY HANDS OVER NTENJERU-BUULE ROAD CONSTRUCTION SITE UNDER GKMA-UPD PROGRAM.
Mpata Sub-County, Mukono.
Mukono District Local Government has officially handed over the site for the construction of the 7.8-kilometre Ntenjeru–Buule Road to China Railway 5 Engineering Group, the contracted company set to execute the project. The handover site is in Mpata Sub-County, Mukono South Constituency, marking the official start of the long-awaited infrastructure project under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UPD), funded by the World Bank Group.
The road construction project, valued at UGX 36 billion, is expected to be completed within 18 months. Supervision of the works will be carried out by Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC), who will closely monitor adherence to standards and timelines.
Speaking during the handover, Eng. Herbert Lutwama, the District Engineer on behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Elizabeth Namanda, emphasized that the contractors are expected to mobilize all necessary equipment and commence work within two weeks. However, he noted that a portion of the land, which falls under the National Forestry Authority (NFA), is pending resolution regarding compensation to the affected individuals.
"The contractors must also secure the required tree-cutting permits before starting construction," Eng. Lutwama cautioned, adding that due diligence is key in managing the environmental aspects of the project.
He further advised the contractors to establish their camp within the immediate perimeter of the project site instead of the initially proposed location 4 kilometres away. “Staying on-site will not only enhance efficiency but also speed up the progress of the work,” he explained.
Eng. Lutwama urged the team to approach the construction with the same dedication and professionalism they demonstrated during the bidding and preparatory stages.
The road passes through environmentally sensitive areas, including sections under the jurisdiction of the NFA, and is expected to open up Mpata Sub-County for improved transportation, trade, and service delivery.
Present during the site handover were several key district officials including Mr. Innocent Mutalya, the Senior Environment Officer; Ms. Doreen Berinda, the District Labour Officer; and the District Senior Community Development Officer, The area District Councilor and Former Speaker of Mukono District Council of Mpata Sub County Hon.Mbonye Emmanuel alongside the supervising consultants from PEC.
The Ntenjeru–Buule Road project is one of the major developments under the GKMA-UPD initiative aimed at modernizing infrastructure, promoting urban mobility, and enhancing service delivery across greater Kampala and surrounding areas
