Support Strengthened for Design and Construction of Kyetume Abattoir, Market, Value Addition Facilities, Agro-Tourism, and Conservation of Kasulo Forest Reserve in Mpunge Sub-county
Mukono District —
Heads of Department in Mukono District have convened to reinforce the preparation process for design studies and the upcoming construction phase of workspace projects under Pillar 3 of the Local Economic Development Strategy (LEDS). These initiatives fall under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), which seeks to stimulate local economic growth and improve service delivery in metropolitan areas.
The high-level technical planning workshop, held at the Mukono District Headquarters, was chaired by the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Muhumuza Stephen, who represented the CAO, Ms. Elizabeth Namanda. The session brought together key district leaders, including the District Planner, District Production Officer and team, Head of the Natural Resources Department, District Physical Planner, District Commercial Officer, Senior Development Officer, and LED specialists from the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Muhumuza Stephen expressed sincere appreciation to the GKMA-UDP team for their continued support toward Mukono District's strategic development efforts. He applauded the progress made on crucial infrastructure such as the Ntenjeru–Bule road and highlighted upcoming priority projects, including the development of the Kyetume Abattoir, Nakifuma Market, and other initiatives currently in the pipeline.
Dr. Mukulu Fred, the District Production Officer, detailed one of the flagship projects — the redevelopment of the Kyetume Livestock Slaughter Slabs. He noted that the goal is to transform the facility into a robust agro-industrial hub. Planned components include a modern slaughterhouse, a value addition facility for livestock by-products (such as hides, skins, bones, horns, and cow dung), a mini-market, and a youth skilling center for value addition, processing, and manufacturing. The project will also include a livestock holding ground and a satellite township to further boost rural urbanization and employment.
Additionally, the meeting emphasized the importance of integrating agro-tourism and environmental protection into LEDS implementation. Special attention was given to the conservation of Kasulo Forest Reserve in Mpunge Sub-county, a key environmental asset poised for eco-tourism development under the district’s green growth strategy.
Mr. Fred Tumwebaze, Local Economic Development Specialist from the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, reiterated that the ministry’s visit aimed to synchronize ongoing and planned LEDS projects with district priorities. The discussion focused on project funding, implementation timelines, and the creation of a joint workplan. He also emphasized the urgency of conducting feasibility studies for key infrastructure, including the Kyetume–Urbretwa road and eco-tourism sites that support environmental conservation.
This engagement marks a strengthening partnership between Mukono District and GKMA-UDP, centered on building sustainable infrastructure, boosting local industry, conserving natural resources, and empowering youth through skilling and innovation.
